Ludwig Andreassen (Service No 5281) was born in Tonsberg, Norway in 1893.  Ludwig arrived in Australia as crew on a Norwegian Whaler in 1912 and remained in Jervis Bay, NSW.

At the time of enlistment with the Waratah March in Wollongong, NSW Ludwig was single, 23 years of age and employed as a labourer.

Ludwig embarked on SS Makarini with 1st Battalion, 16th reinforcements on 1 April 1916 arriving in France on 17 May 1916 after a short stop in Egypt. Ludwig joined 1st Battalion in France on 27 July 1916 and took part in the battle for Pozieres.

On 18 December 1916, he was admitted to hospital and when discharged served time in England.

Ludwig returned to the 1st Battalion on 16 October 1917 and served on the Western Front until he was wounded in action on 18 September 1918. He was evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of gun shot wounds to his left hand.

Ludwig was returned to Australia in January 1919 and was medically discharged 4 September 1919.
