Joseph Sidney Marsh
Joseph Sidney Marsh (Service No 6564), was born in Woonona, N.S.W.
At enlistment he was single, 21 years old, worked as a general dealer, lived in Woonona, N.S.W., and had served 8 years with the Cadets.
Joseph embarked on HMAT A40 Ceramic, with 13th Battalion, 21st Reinforcement, as Acting Sergeant, on 7th October 1916. He arrived in England on 21st November 1916, and reverted to Private on 18th January 1917, in order to join 13th Battalion in France.
On 4th February 1917, he was wounded in action and evacuated to hospital for treatment of shrapnel wounds to his buttocks. Joseph returned to his unit on 3rd May 1917, and was promoted to Lance Corporal, on 21st May 1917. On 8th September 1917, he was promoted to Corporal and on 27th September 1917, he was promoted to Sergeant. Joseph was selected for Officer training on 27th December 1917.
On 1st August 1918, he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant and joined 13th Battalion, C Company, in France, on 27th August 1918. He was wounded in action, on 20th September 1918, and evacuated to hospital in England, for treatment of shrapnel wounds to his left leg. Joseph was promoted to Lieutenant, on 9th November 1918. He was returned to Australia in January 1919, and discharged.
On 2nd April 1942, Joseph enlisted for service in World War 2, (Service No N266478).
Major Marsh served until 8th December 1945, with 12th Battalion VDC.
Joseph died in Wollongong, N.S.W. in 1963, and is buried at Unanderra Cemetery.
His brother, Stanley Marsh (Service No 2709), also served.
