Alfred Ernest Edwards
Alfred Edwards (Service No 4534A), was born in Berry, N.S.W., in 1891.
On 1 May 1915, he married Rose O'Leary, in Sydney, N.S.W. Unfortuanrtely, Rose died in 1916.
At enlistment, he was 26 years old and worked as a labourer in Kiama, N.S.W.
Alfred embarked on HMAT A72 Beltana, with the 30th Battalion, 12th Reinforcement, on 25 November 1916. He arrived in England on 29 January 1917, and after training, was posted to the 35th Battalion, in France, on 12 August 1917.
Alfred saw service on the Western Front, until 13 October 1917, when he was wounded in action at Passchendaele, Belgium. He was evacuated to hospital in England, for treatment of gun shot wounds to his right eye and back.
Alfred was assessed as being unfit for further active service and was repatriated to Australia, in February 1918. He was discharged medically unfit on 24 April 1918.
In September 1918, Alfred re-enlisted for Home Service, and was discharged on 4 December 1918.
Alfred died in 1958, from the injuries he sustained from jumping off a cliff at Kiama, N.S.W.
Alfred is buried in Robertson Cemetery, Robertson, N.S.W.
Alfred's brothers, Herbert (Service No 59737), Lancelot (Service No 5087) and John (Service No 5086) also served.
