Charles William Gibbs
Charles Gibbs (Service No 10043) was born in Kiama, N.S.W.
At enlistment Charles was single, 18 years old and worked as a labourer; previously he had served 8 months with 37th Infantry Militia. He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A35 Berrima with 3rd Field Artillery Brigade, 13th Reinforcement on 17th December 1915.
After arriving in Egypt Charles joined the Divisional Ammunition Column on 24th January 1916.
He was sent on to France, arriving on 2nd April 1916. Charles was wounded in action on 4th July 1916 and evacuated to hospital for treatment of shrapnel wounds to his jaw.
Charles saw service on the the Western Fron: he joined 119th Howitzer Battery in France on 26th October 1916, then on 31st March 1917 he was posted to 14th Field Artillery Brigade.
On 11th November 1918 he was admitted to hospital suffering from severe pneumonia.
Charles was returned to Australia in March 1919 and discharged from the AIF, medically unfit, on 17th June 1919.
After the war Charles married Amy Bayly.
He died in Sydney in 1962 and is buried in Eastern Suburbs Cemetery.
