William Hayman
William Hayman (Service No 6977) was born in Sydney and came to Wollongong, NSW soon after.
In 1909, William married Pearl Murray in Wollongong and together they had a child.
At the time of enlistment William was married, 34 years of age, employed as a underground mine manager and lived in Balgownie, NSW.
William embarked on HMAT A9 - Shropshire with the Tunnel Company Reinforcements on 11 May 1917. William arrived in England on 19 July 1917 where he joined the 3rd Tunnel Company in the field on 8 September 1917. William saw service on the Western Front as a miner.
William was promoted to Sergeant.
William returned to Australia in May 1919 and was discharged in the 2nd Military District on 30th July 1919.
William had become a member of the Methodist Church as a teenager and took a very active part in the Church after the War.
William died in Wollongong, NSW in 1938 and is commemorated on the Balgownie War Memorial 1914-1918.
