Charles James Prescott
Charles Prescott (Service No 3445) was born in Wingen, N.S.W. In 1904 he married Jemima Rebecca Sconce in Newcastle and they had one daughter.
At enlistment Charles claimed to be 38 years old, and gave his address as Helensburgh, N.S.W. where he worked as a miner. In fact, Charles was 46 years old and had not long been released from gaol. Initially Charles nominated his daughter as his next of kin, but his AIF Attestation Papers in his NAA file were changed at some time, nominating his wife, who at that time was living at Hamilton in Newcastle, N.S.W.
Charles embarked from Sydney on HMAT A68 Anchises on 24th January 1917. The troops arrived in England on 27th March 1917. Charles was transferred to the Australian Veterinary Hospital in France on 17th May 1917.
He returned to Australia in April 1919 and was discharged from the AIF on 21st July 1919.
On 12th May 1927 Charles sustained a serious head injury in a fight and died in Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, 3 days later.
