Charles Smith (Service No 670) was born in Sydney, NSW.

At the time of enlistment Charles was single, 20 years of age, employed as a sawyer and had previously served 4 years with the Militia.

Charles embarked on HMAT A40 - Ceramic with the ANZAC Cyclist Battalion, 5th Reinforcements on 7 October 1916.  He arrived in England on 21 November 1916 and joined the 4th Battalion in France on 1 April 1917.

Charles was admitted to hospital in England for treatment of thrombosis of his left leg and returned to Australia in December 1917.   Charles was discharged as medically unfit on 23 March 1918.
