Richard Smith (Service No 338) was born in Liverpool, England around 1892.  In 1914 Richard married Violet Hails in Helensburgh, N.S.W. 

At enlistment Richard was 23 years old, worked as miner and he and Violet lived in Helensburgh.  He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A38 Ulysses with 1st Mining Corps, 1st Company on 20th February 1916.

The troops arrived in France on 5th May 1916.  Richard was wounded in action on 29th June 1916 and evacuated to hospital for treatment of gun shot wounds to his right leg and arm.

He returned to France & the fighting on 15th October 1916, joining 3rd Tunnel Company in the field on 18th December 1916.

Richard saw service on the Western Front and returned to Australia in May 1919.  He was discharged from the AIF on 28th August 1919.

Richard enlisted for service in World War II on 31st October 1941 (Service No NX49985), and served until discharge on 30th June 1942.
