John Thomson (Service no 6857) was born in Sydney, NSW.

At the time of his enlistment John was single, 24 years of age, employed as a miner, resided in Bulli, NSW and enlisted in Kiama, NSW.

John embarked on HMAT A17 - Port Nicholson with the 13th Battalion, 22nd Reinforcements on 8 November 1916.  He arrived in England on 10 January 1917 and joined the 13th Battalion in France on 15 March 1917.

John was wounded in action during his first action at Bullecourt, France on 11 April 1917.   

John was reported as missing but it was discovered that he had been taken prisoner while unconscious.  John had received gun shot wounds to his right knee, hip thigh and both hands.  He remained unconscious for 14 days and during this time had been taken to Germany. 

In January 1918, John was repatriated through Holland to England.

John returned to Australia in May 1918 and was discharged on 4th December 1918.
