Leo Ewan Cameron
Leo Ewan Cameron (Service no. 3277) was born in Murrumburrah, NSW.
Although he enlisted at Coonabarabran, NSW, he gave his address as Woonona, NSW. He stated that he was a single 21 year old labourer at that time. However on the 24th July 1917 he signed a statuatory declaration stating that he was only 19 years old after his mother wrote to the Army detailing is correct age and state of health.
He embarked on HMAT A28 Miltiades with the 35th Battalion, 8th reinforcements on 2nd August 1917. Arriving in England on 2nd October 1917 he joined the 35th Battalion in France on 5th February 1918.
While fighting near Amiens he was wounded in action on 4th April 1918. He was evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of serious gun shot wounds to his right thigh. Cameron returned to duty on 26th August 1918 but was sent to hospital with a septic knee on 27th September 1918.
He was repatriated to Australia on board the HT City York on 14th January 1919 and discharged on 28th March 1919, in Sydney.
On 5th September 1936 he married Margaret Keating in Moruya, NSW and they had 5 children.
He enlisted for service in World War 2 at Cowra, NSW and served from 9th May 1942 until 17th September 1945 as a private N386635.
He died in Canberra and is buried in Young Cemetery, NSW.
