William Daniel Hardy
13790 Private William Hardy was born in Bathurst.
At the time of enlistment he was a single 18 year old railway porter from Thirroul who had served 2 years with 37th infantry Militia.
William embarked on HMAT A61 Kanowna with the Australian Army Medical Corps Special Reinforcements on 29th March 1916. He arrived in Egypt, went to France on 16th August 1916 and saw servce in Egypt, France and Belgium with medical units.
On 3rd April 1917 he was admitted to hospital with tonsilitis and did not recover enough to return to active service. Repatriated to Audstralia in October 1917 he was discharged as medically unfit due to anemia and debility on 20th December 1917.
In 1921 William married Jessie McDougall in Chatswood and died in 1961.
William Hardy kept an extensive diary while serving and it is now with the State Library NSW.
