Maurice Llewellyn Lewis
Maurice Lewis (Service No. 6272) was born in Sydney. He enlisted during the Waratah March at Stanwell Park, N.S.W. when he was 26 years old. Maurice was single, worked as a miner, and lived at Corrimal, N.S.W.
Maurice embarked on the HMAT A14 Euripides with the 1st Battalion, 20th Reinforcements on 9th September 1916. He arrived in England on 28th December 1916.
Posted to the 5th Pioneers, he joined them in France on 21st April 1917.
Maurice was wounded in action on the Western Front on the 30th September 1917 and was evacuated to hospital in England for treatment to multiple gun shot wounds to his leg.
He returned to his unit on 21st February 1918. On 24th April 1918 Maurice was wounded a second time and evacuated to England with shrapnel wounds to his thigh.
Maurice was repatriated to Australia in August 1918 and discharged on 7th November 1918.
He married Helen Lintern in 1949 in Sydney.
Maurice died in 1960 and is buried in Wollongong Cemetery.
His service is commemorated on the Coalcliff-Scarborough-Clifton Roll of Honor.
