Charles Henry Townend
Charles Townend (Service no 6335) was born in Kiama, NSW in 1897.
At the time of enlistment Charles was single, 19 years of age, employed as a monumental mason. He had previously served 4 years with the Cadets and 1 year with the Militia.
Charles embarked on HMAT A14 - Euripides with the 13th Battalion, 20th Reinforcements on 9 September 1916.
Charles arrived in England on 26 October 1916 and joined 13th Battalion in France on 21 January 1917. He saw service on the Western Front and was fighting on the Menin Road when he was wounded in action on 26 October 1917.
Charles was evacuated to hospital for treatment after a gas attack. He was repatriated to Australia in March 1918 and medically discharged on 11 July 1918 with Neurasthenia.
Charles married Ethel McDermott in Parkes, NSW in 1926.
Charles died in Wollongong, NSW in 1972.
