William Thomas Mark Wheatley (Service No 5266), was born in Condoblin, N.S.W.

At enlistment, with the Waratah March, in Stanwell Park, N.S.W., he was single, 21 years old, worked as a labourer and had served with the Militia.

On 1st April 1916, William embarked on SS Makarini, with 1st Battalion, 16th Reinforcement. He arrived in Egypt on 2nd May 1916, and was sent on to France, on 17th May 1916. William was admitted to hospital in England on 3rd July 1916, with myalgia, and did not return to France until 7th May 1917. He sprained his ankle in training in June 1917, but recovered quickly.

In July 1917, William was wounded in action. He received gun shot wounds to his chest, hip and knee, and ear inflamation due to shell shock. William recovered from the gun shot wounds, but an operation on his ear, left him deaf and with facial paralysis. He was returned to Australia in December 1917, and admitted to hospital for further treatment. William was discharged medically unfit, with a pension, on 9th August 1918.

In 1919, William married Eileen Bullock, and they had 3 children.

William died in Concord Hospital, in 1953.

He is buried in Woronora Cemetery, Sutherland, N.S.W.

William's service is commemorated on the Forbes War Memorial, Forbes, N.S.W.
