Carlton Chie (Service no 5860) was born in Dapto, NSW.

At the time of enlistment Carlton was single,  22 years of age, employed as a farmer and resided in Dapto, NSW.   

Carlton Chie was a member of the Wollongong Chinese Community of Farmers and was able to enlist for service in WW1 at a time when it was hard for Non-British heritage men to serve.

Carlton embarked on the HMAT A62 - Wandilla from Melbourne, Victoria with the Field Artillery Brigade, Reinforcement 12 on 9 November 1915.

Carlton arrived in Egypt and joined the 3rd Battery at Gallipoli, Turkey on 7 December 1915.  He returned to Egypt in January 1916 when the last troops left from Suvla Bay, Turkey. 

Carlton arrived in France on 29 March 1916 and served with the Artillery Brigade on the Western Front.  On 29 October 1918 he was promoted to Corporal.

Carlton returned to Australia in April 1919 and was discharged on 29 July 1919.

In 1924 he married Rita Lindsay in Wollongong, NSW. 

Carlton enlisted in Wollongong, NSW on 17 May 1942 for service in WW2.
