McCarthy King - birth name Edward McCarthy Ring
McCarthy King (Service no 5138) at birth in Chiltern, Victoria in 1892 was named Edward McCarthy Ring.
At the time of enlistment with the Waratah March, McCarthy was married, 23 years of age, employed as a labourer and resided in Kiama, NSW. He had previously served 2 years with the Light Horse Militia.
McCarthy first named his Mother as next of kin but this was changed to his wife before he embarked. He was married to Elsie McDonnell and together they had 2 children.
McCarthy embarked on SS Makarini with the 1st Battalion, 16th Reinforcements on 1 April 1916 and arrived in France on 17 May 1916. McCarthy joined the 1st Battalion on 12 June 1916 and was wounded in action at Pozieres, France some time between 22-25 July 1916. He was evacuated to hospital for treatment of a gun shot wound to his right thigh.
McCarthy returned to duty on 15 February 1917 and served on the Western Front until he was wounded again at Bullecourt, France on 5 May 1917. McCarthy returned to duty at Polygon Wood, Belguim and was wounded in action a third time on 16 September 1917. He was evacuated to hospital for treatment of a gun shot wound to his leg.
McCarthy was found to be medicaly unfit for further active service and was repatriated to Australia in February 1918 and medically discharged on 18 September 1918.
McCarthy returned to Victoria where he died in 1950. He is remembered on the Kiama War Memorial.
