Cyril Read (Service no 1033) was born in Kiama, NSW in 1893 where he attended Fort Street School.

At the time of enlistment, Cyril was single, 21 years of age, employed as a clerk with the Commercial Bank and had previously served 9 months with the Senior Cadets.

Cyril embarked on HMAT A19 - Afric with the 1st Battalion, D Company on 18 October 1914.  He arrived in Egypt in December and was transferred to the 1st Battalion, B Company.

Cyril, along with his Unit, landed at Gallipoli, Turkey as part of the 1st Brigade formation at approximately 8 am and was killed some time later.

Cyril has no known grave and is remembered on the Lone Pine Memorial.

Cyril's father, Doctor George Read, enlisted in June and served as a Captain (Honorary Major) for one trip on a hospital ship before he was discharged.
