William Henderson Southall
William Henderson Southall (Service No 3040), was born in Newcastle, England.
At enlistment, he was single, 24 years old, worked as a grocer and lived in Unanderra, N.S.W.
William embarked from Melbourne, on HMAT A68 Anchises, with the 31st Battalion, 5th Reinforcement, on 14th March 1916. He arrived in France on 30th June 1916, after a stop in Egypt. William saw service on the Western Front. On 3rd October 1916, he was promoted to Lance Corporal, but had a number of hospital admissions due to illness. On 28th June 1917, William was transferred to 3rd AA Hospital in England, and served with them until the war ended. On 5th November 1918, he was promoted to Corporal.
Whilst serving at the hospital, William met Jean Lockhart, a WAA C cook, and they married on 14th June 1918. He was returned to Australia in December 1919, with Jean, and their 2 month old baby.
William was discharged medically unfit, due to defective eyesight, on 17th May 1920.
William died in Sydney, N.S.W., in 1961.
