Ralph Codling
Ralph Codling (Service No 1530), was born in Gateshead, England.
At enlistment, he stated he was single, 27 years old, worked as a seaman and miner, and lived in Bulli, N.S.W.
He embarked on HMAT A49 Seang Choon, with the 4th Battalion, 3rd Reinforcement, on 11th February 1915. After initially arriving in Egypt, Ralph landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula, on 6th May 1915, and served with the 4th Battalion, until he was admitted to hospital with dysentery, in September 1915.
On 10th March 1916, in Egypt, he was transferred to the 1st Pioneers. Ralph was promoted to Corporal on 16th March 1916. Ralph arrived in France on 2nd April 1916, and was promoted to Sergeant on 27th April 1916. He saw service on the Western Front until 26th October 1917, when he was wounded in action. Ralph was evacuated to hospital for treatment of gun shot wounds to his back and left arm. He was repatriated to Australia in February 1918, and discharged medically unfit, on 29th April 1918.
Ralph died a few months later, in July 1919, and is buried in Bulli Cemetery, Bulli, N.S.W.
In 1917, Ralph had married Florence Gibson, in England, and it is unclear if she came to Australia. A death notice in the paper mentions a wife and son.
