William Robert Dawson
William Robert Dawson (Service No 6708), was born in Wollongong, N.S.W.
At enlistment, he was single, 24 years old and worked as a carpenter.
William embarked from Melbourne, on HMAT A11 Ascanius, with 8th Field Ambulance, Sections B and C, on 10th November 1915. He arrived in Egypt, and was admitted to hospital due to sickness, on 19th January 1916. This was the first of a number of illnesses he suffered while on active service.
William arrived in France on 28th June 1916, and saw service on the Western Front. On 19th May 1918, he was transferred to 3rd Australian Hospital, in England, and served there.
On 22nd January 1919, William married Helen Morrison, in Scotland, and she returned to Australia with him, in July 1919.
He was discharged on 18th October 1919.
William died in Sydney, in 1976.
William Dawson is commemorated for his service on the Balgownie War Memorial.
William's brothers, Charles Dawson (Service No 6764) and James Dawson (Service No 4651), also served.
