Robert Grant
Robert Grant (Service No 58567), was born in Keiraville, N.S.W.
At enlistment in Wollongong, N.S.W., he was single, 20 years old, worked as a wheeler and had served with the 37th Infantry Militia.
Robert embarked on SS Feldmarschall, with the NSW General Reinforcements, on 19th June 1918. He arrived in England on 26th August 1918 and was posted to 55th Battalion. Robert then went to France, and on 24th March 1919, he was attached to the Graves Burial Unit. He returned to Australia in October 1919, and was discharged on 10th December 1919.
In January 1922, he was holidaying at Crookhaven Heads, N.S.W., when he rescued a drowning girl. Robert was unable to save a second girl, and left the beach before he could be thanked. A letter appeared in the local paper, naming him and asking for recognition for him.
Robert died in Wollongong, N.S.W., in 1972.
