Arthur Orpen MacGillycuddy
Arthur Orpen MacGillycuddy (Service No 343),was born in Sydney, N.S.W.
At enlistment, he was single, 22 years old, worked as a farrier and lived in Wollongong, N.S.W.
Arthur embarked on HMAT A29 Suevic, as a Farrier Sergeant, with the 6th Light Horse Regiment, D Troop, C Squadron, on 21st December 1914.
He arrived in Egypt and was sent to Gallipoli, Turkey, on 20th May 1915. Arthur served there until 17th August 1915, when he was evacuated, due to sickness. When he was finally well enough to travel, he was sent to hospital in England. Arthur remained in England, and on 5th December 1916, he was sent to the Royal Air Corps Flying School.
Arthur graduated as 2nd Lieutenant, on 28th April 1917, and was promoted to Lieutenant, on 28th July 1917. He joined Australian Flying Corps, 69th Squadron, in France, on 21st August 1917.
On 18th December 1917, Arthur was involved in a flying accident, and admitted to hospital with concussion. Arthur was repatriated to Australia, in March 1918, and discharged medically unfit, on 26th September 1918, due to post concussion syndrome.
In October 1918, he had re-enlisted, and embarked for England, from Melbourne, for the voyage only, and on return to Australia, was discharged again on 21st February 1919.
In 1927, Arthur married Patricia Parsons, and they had 3 children. Arthur and Patricia divorced in 1951.
Arthur died in Sydney, N.S.W., in 1972.
