Francis William Martin (Service No 1243), was born in Woonona, N.S.W.

In 1913, Francis married Nellie Coltman, and they had 3 children.

At enlistment, he was 22 years old, worked as a labourer, lived in Woonona, N.S.W., and had served with the Militia.

Francis embarked on HMAT A40 Ceramic, with Light Trench Mortar Battery, 2nd Reinforcement, on 7th October 1916. He arrived in England on 21st November 1916, and joined the 2nd Light Trench Mortar Battery, in France, on 2nd April 1917.

On 11th May 1917, Francis was promoted to Corporal, and saw service on the Western Front. On 2nd April 1918, he was wounded in action, and evacuated to hospital in England, where he was treated for gun shot wounds to his abdomen and back. Francis was repatriated to Australia, in August 1918, and discharged medically unfit, on 21st November 1918.

Francis died in Bulli, N.S.W., in 1953.
