George William Mettam
George William Mettam (Service No 30453), was born in Wollongong, N.S.W.
At enlistment, he was single, 25 years old, worked as a clerk and lived in Perth, W.A.
George embarked on HMAT A20 Hororata, with the 4th Field Artillery Brigade, 11th Reinforcement, on 23rd November 1916. He arrived in England on 29th January 1917, then going on to France, arriving on 21st July 1917. George saw service on the Western Front with a number of artillery units, until the end of the war, without being wounded.
In 1919, George was a member of the AIF Rowing team that won a special regatta. He returned to Australia, in October 1919 and was discharged, on 9th December 1919.
On 4th November 1924, George married Jessie Burns, in Perth, W.A. and the couple had one child. George continued his association with rowing, and was working as the manager for Cresco Fertiliser Company, in Western Australia, when he retired.
George died in Perth, W.A., in 1967.
George's brother, Frank Mettam (Service No 8541), also served.
