Arthur James Rutledge
Arthur James Rutledge (Service No 1762), was born in Kiama, N.S.W.
At enlistment, he was single, 20 years old and worked as a farmhand.
Arthur embarked on HMAT A34 Persic, with the 7th Light Horse Regiment, 12th Reinforcement, on 18th November 1915. He arrived in Egypt on 28th December 1915, but was admitted to hospital, due to sickness, on 30th December 1915. Arthur returned to duty on 1st March 1916, and served in Egypt until 2nd November 1916, when he joined the 4th Battalion Camel Corps.
Arthur saw service in Egypt and the Middle East, and was returned to Australia, in July 1919. He was discharged on 21st October 1919.
Arthur received a warm welcome home, along with his cousin, William Rutledge (Service No 2374). He moved to the Tweed area and was an early banana grower.
Arthur also worked for the Post Master General (PMG), as a linesman. In September 1946, whilst he was working, Arthur suddenly collapsed and died.
