William Henry Rutledge
William Henry Rutledge (Service No 2374), was born in Bowral, N.S.W., in 1892.
At enlistment, he was single, 23 years old, worked as a farmer and lived in Gerringong, N.S.W. William's family had moved from their farm, at Mount Kembla, N.S.W., around the time he was born.
William embarked on HMAT A1 Hymettus, with the 6th Light Horse Regiment, 16th Reinforcement, on 3rd May 1916. After arriving in Egypt, he joined the 6th Light Horse Regiment, on 15th August 1916. William saw service in Egypt and the Middle East, and was returned to Australia in June 1919. He was quarantined in Melbourne, Victoria, on the way home, but the reason is not stated, and no discharge date is available.
On 21st June 1922, William married his cousin, Cressalina Rutledge, in Kiama, N.S.W.
William died in Sydney, N.S.W., and is buried in Jamberoo Cemetery, Jamberoo, N.S.W.
He is commemorated for his service on the Marshall Mount School Roll of Honor.
William's cousin, Arthur Rutledge (Service No 1762), also served.
