John William Rutledge
John William Rutledge (Service No 2677), was born in Kiama, N.S.W.
At enlistment, he was single, 22 years old and worked as a milk carter.
John embarked on HMAT A54 Runic, with 2nd Battalion, 8th Reinforcement, on 9th August 1915. After arriving in Egypt, he joined 2nd Battalion, A Company, in Gallipoli, Turkey, on 4th November 1915.
On 28th March 1916, John went to France, taking part in the Battle for Pozieres. He was wounded in action, on 22nd July 1916, and evacuated to hospital in England, for treatment of a gun shot wound to his left thigh. On 6th September 1917, John returned to duty, in Belgium, and served on the Western Front until 14th April 1918, when he was wounded a second time. He was sent to England, and treated for a gun shot wound to his forearm. John was repatriated to Australia in December 1918, and dicharged medically unfit, on 8th April 1919.
In 1926, John married Vera Needham.
John died in 1967.
