James Fraser Smith (Service No 1450), was born in Glasgow, Scotland, around 1885.

At enlistment, he was single, 29 years old, worked as a miner and lived in Balgownie, N.S.W. James had served 3 years with a territorial unit, and named a friend in Scotland, as his next of kin, however, there is reference on file to his mother, Mrs I Smith, of Balgownie, N.S.W.

James embarked on HMAT A48 Seang Bee, with the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Reinforcement, on 11th February 1915. After initially arriving in Egypt, he was sent to Gallipoli, Turkey, where he joined the 3rd Battalion, on 7th May 1915. 

On 9th August 1915, during the Battle of Lone Pine, James was wounded. He was evacuated to Malta, and then to England, for treatment of a bomb wound to his thigh and knee. He was repatriated to Australia in March 1916, and after fuurther treatment at Georges Heights in Sydney, he was discharged.
