John Gilligan (Service No 5707), was born in Limerick, Ireland around 1882.

At enlistment, he was single, 33 years old, worked as a steward and lived in Scarborough, N.S.W. John listed his step brother, W. King, from Scarborough, N.S.W., as his next of kin.

He embarked on HMAT A55 Kyarra, with 1st Battalion, 18th Reinforcement, on 3rd June 1916. He arrived in England on 3rd August 1916, and joined the 1st Battalion in France, on 1st October 1916. John saw service on the Western Front, and has no wounding recorded on file, though he was admitted to hospital due to sickness, a number of times. John was returned to Australia in August 1919, and discharged medically unfit, on 11th February 1920.

In 1921, John was a patient in the No 4 Australian General Hospital, Randwick, N.S.W., when he died from a stroke.

John's brother, Patrick Gilligan (Service No 6027), also served.
