Albert William Lewis
Albert William Lewis (Service No 4762), was born in Wollongong, N.S.W.
At enlistment, he was single, 18 years old, worked as a wheeler and had served with the 37th Infantry.
Albert embarked on HMAT A40 Ceramic, with 18th Battalion, 12th Reinforcement, on 13th April 1916. After initially arriving in England, he went to France on 17th September 1916, joining 18th Battalion, on 2nd October 1916. Albert saw service on the Western Front, until he was wounded in action, on 8th November 1916. He was evacuated to hospital for treatment of a gun shot wound to his left hand, but two fingers had to be amputated. Albert was repatriated to Australia in May 1917, and discharged medically unfit on 12th August 1917.
On 6th August 1923, he married Essie Hayes, and they raised 6 children.
Albert died in 1959, and is buried at Woronora Cemetery, Sutherland, N.S.W.
