Vere Perth Miles
Vere Miles (Service No 3840) was born in Wollongong, NSW.
At enlistment Vere was single, 18 years old, employed as a tailor and lived in Darlinghurst, NSW. He had served 4 years with the Cadets.
He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A54 Runic with 20th Battalion, 9th Reinforcements on 20th January 1916 and arrived in Egypt on 26th February 1916.
Vere arrived in France in May 1916 and joined A Company, 20th Battalion in the field on 28th July 1916 and saw service on the Western Front.
He was admitted to hospital on 25th November 1916 with debility following a doctor's observation that Vere was a juvenile and too young to be serving. Subsequently the decision was made to repatriate him to Australia in June 1917. Vere was discharged medically unfit with a pension on 12th September 1917.
On 16th June 1919 he enlisted in the Special AIF and sailed for England on 12th August 1919 returning for discharge on 27th March 1920.
In 1924 Vere married Enid Pritchard at Glebe, NSW.
Vere also served in World War II (Service No NX174343), enlisting on 17th August 1943; he served as a Sergeant with 9th Field Hygiene Company at Kapooka, NSW until 15th August 1946.
Vere died in 1970.
