Frederick Ernest Roberts
Frederick Ernest Roberts (Service No 3108), was born in Kiama, N.S.W.
At enlistment, he was single, 21 years old, worked as a horse driver and had served 3 years with the 37th Infantry Militia.
Frederick embarked on HMAT A69 Warialda, with the 4th Battalion, 10th Reinforcement, on 8th October 1915. He disembarked in Egypt in November 1915 but is unclear from his file if he was sent to Gallipoli, Turkey. On 13th February 1916, Frederick was transferred to the 56th Battalion, arriving in France on 20th June 1916. The 56th Battalion took part in the Battle for Fromelles.
On 25th September 1916, Frederick was wounded in action, sustaining shrapnel wounds to his arm, but he remained on duty. On 1st October 1916, he was admitted to hospital for treatment of this wound, returning to his unit on 11th November 1916.
On 24th October 1917, Frederick was wounded a second time. He suffered the effects of a gas attack and returned to duty on 2nd November 1917. On 2nd September 1918, Frederick was wounded a third time and admitted to hospital for treatment of shrapnel wounds to his right knee. He was repatriated to Australia in January 1919, and discharged medically unfit on 23rd April 1919.
Frederick worked for the Railway Commissioners Quarry after the war.
In 1920, Frederick married Ida Hammond, in Kiama, N.S.W., and the couple raised a family.
Frederick died in Kiama, N.S.W., in 1950.
He is buried in Kiama Cemetery.
