Alfred Smith (Service No 1949) was born in Thirroul, NSW in 1899.

At enlistment Alfred was single, employed as a rope worker with 4 years service in the Cadets. He stated his age as being 18 but was, in fact, only 16 years old at the time.

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A60 Aeneas with 6th Light Horse Regiment, 13th Reinforcement on 20th December 1915.  Alfred arrived in Egypt on 17th January 1916 where he transferred to the Artillery.  He was posted to 114th Howitzer Battery and joined them in France on 27th June 1916.

Alfred saw service on the Western Front and was posted to 106th Battery on 3rd April 1917.  He was admitted to hospital sick on 21st August 1918.

On 21st October 1918 Alfred married Hilda Butler in Warwick, England.

He returned to Australia in December 1918 and was discharged medically unfit on 20th April 1919.
