William Lewis (Service No 4224) was born in Shellharbour, N.S.W.

At enlistment William was single, 18 years old, worked as a butcher and lived in Brisbane, Qld; he had served 4 years with the Cadets.

William embarked from Brisbane on HMAT A55 Kyarra with 9th Battalion, 13th Reinforcement on 3rd January 1916.  After a stop in Egypt he arrived in France with 9th Battalion in May 1916.

He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 18th February 1918.  William saw service on the Western Front until 24th April 1918 when he was wounded in action and evacuated to hospital for treatment of a severe gun shot wound to his chest.

He was repatriated to Australia in November 1918 and discharged medically unfit on 8th March 1919.

William died in 1926 and is buried in Witta Cemetery on the Sunshine Coast, Qld.

William's brother Arthur Dalgetta Lewis (Service No 4167) was killed in action on 14th November 1916.
