Sydney Smith (Service no 8462) was born in Wollongong.

In 1914 Sydney married Florence Brett and together they had 2 children.

At the time of enlistment Sydney was married, 25 years of age and employed as a hospital attendant.

He embarked on HMAT A54 - Runic with the 1st Light Horse Field Ambulance, 13th Reinforcements on 20 January 1916.  He arrived in Egypt on 26 February 1916 and served in Egypt until being sent to France on 30 September 1916.

On 7 February 1917, Sydney was transferred to 8th Field Ambulance and saw service on the Western Front.

Sydney returned to Australia in May 1919 as nursing staff and was discharged on 22 August 1919.
