John William Martin
John Martin (Service no 737/1583) was single, 24 years of age and employed as a hairdresser when he enlisted.
John embarked for Rabaul, Papua New Guinea with F Company of the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force on 12 August 1914 and was discharged on 4 March 1915.
John re-enlisted on 11 July 1915 and embarked on HMAT A72 - Beltana with the 30th Battalion, 1st Reinforcements on 9 November 1915. He arrived in Egypt on 11 December 1915 and was posted to B Company on 15 February 1916. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 16 February 1916. John arrived in France on 3 June 1916 where he saw service at Fromelle with the 30th Battalion and was wounded in action on 20 July 1916.
John was repatriated to Australia in October 1916 and medically discharged on 30 May 1917 after receiving treatment for shell shock.
On 27 April 1919, John married Mary Raindle.
John enlisted for service in the second world war and served as N318118 Gunner Martin with 7th Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps from 27 March 1942 until 30 September 1945.
John died in 1966.
