Herbert Scrimshaw (Service No 2720) was born in Newark, England in June 1870. He made his way to Australia, and at the time of enlistment, he was single, 42 years old, worked as a labourer and lived in Kiama, N.S.W.

Herbert embarked on HMAT A40 Ceramic, with the 45th Battalion, 6th Reinforcement, on 7th October 1916. He arrived in England on 21st November 1916, and joined the 45th Battalion in France, on 18th January 1917. Herbert's service on the Western Front was short, as he was wounded in action on 21st February 1917. He was evacuated to hospital dangerously ill, with multiple gun shot wounds to his head and shoulder. Herbert was repatriated to Australia in October 1917, and discharged medically unfit on 10th January 1918.

In 1927, he married Leah Houston, in Sydney, N.S.W.

Herbert died in 1935.
