John David Dyer
John David Dyer (Service No 44) was born in Kiama, N.S.W.
At enlistment, he was single, 18 years old, worked as a clerk and had served 4 years with the Cadets.
John embarked on HMAT A35 Berrima, with the 20th Battalion, D Company, on 26th June 1915. After a stop in Egypt, he arrived in Gallipoli, Turkey, on 26th August 1915, and served there until the evacuation.
John then went to France, arriving on 25th March 1916, and was wounded in action at Pozieres, France, on 3rd August 1916. He was evacuated to hospital for treatment of shell wounds to his face. John returned to duty on 12th August 1916.
On 20th October 1916, he transferred to tge 45th Battalion, where he joined his brother Thomas Dyer (Service No 4762). He saw service on the Western Front until the end of the war. He was returned to Australia in April 1919, and discharged on 30th July 1919.
On 10th November 1925, John married Mildred Longbottom, in Kiama, N.S.W., and they raised one child.
John moved to South Grafton, where he died in 1961.
John is commemorated for his service on the Kiama War Memorial, Kiama, N.S.W.
