John Houslar (Service no 510) was born in Wollongong, NSW in 1897.  At the time of enlistment in Nowra, NSW, John was single, 19 years of age, employed as a carpenter and had previously served 4 years with the Cadets. 

John embarked on HMAT A20 - Hororata with 5th Machine Gun Company, 8th Reinforcements on 23 November 1916.  He arrived in England on 29 January 1917 and joined 4th Machine Gun Company in France on 8 September 1917.  He was not wounded in action but was admitted to hospital due to illness a number of occasions. 

John was granted leave in England for work from 30 May 1919 until 30 August 1919.  He returned to Australia in October 1919 and was discharged on 4 January 1920.

On 4 April 1925, John married Jean Taylor. 

John died in 1963 and is buried in Northern Suburbs Cemetery.

John is remembered on the Wollongong War Memorial.
