William Stephen Stone
William Stone (Service No 632) was born in Glasgow, Scotland.
At enlistment, William was single, 21 years old, worked as a miner and lived in Bulli, N.S.W. He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A8 Argyllshire with Field Artillery Brigade 1, Brigade Ammunition Column on 18th October 1914. He arrived in Egypt in December 1914 and joined 2nd Battery on 23rd February 1915.
The early dates on his file are scant and information about his Gallipoli service comes from a letter he wrote to the Army after discharge. In 1967 William wrote to the Australia Military Forces applying for his war Medallion and Badge for his service on Gallipoli. The Army replied they had no records of his serving at Gallipoli and requested a Statutary Declaration. In the Declaration, William stated he had disembarked from SS Indian at Gallipoli on 25th April 1915, his commanding officer was a Major Rabett and that he had left Gallipoli in early December 1915. William also included a letter giving details of his service on Gallipoli (see page 15 & pages 18-21, NAA (National Archives of Australia documents),
William was sent to France and saw service on the Western Front where he was wounded in Belgium on 5th November 1917. He was admitted to hospital for treatment of a gas attack.
He was returned to Australia in March 1919 and discharged medically unfit on 27th July 1919.
In 1919 he married Florence Bartlett in Wollongong, N.S.W. and the couple raised 3 children.
William died in Concord in 1975.
