George was sent to Malta, Egypt and finally England.  While in England he was diagnosed as having diptheria.  He finally returned to his unit in France on 7th August 1916 and saw service on the Western Front but his health was not good.

On 18th February 1918 he was transferred to 4th Field Ambulance but was wounded in action on 5th April 1918 and sent to hospital in England for treatment of a gas attack.

In 1920 he married Marjorie Rae.
