James Stuart Murray-Cowper
James Murray-Cowper (Service no 1108) was born in Euston, England in 1894.
At the time of enlistment, James was single, 20 years of age, employed as an engine cleaner and resided in Nowra, NSW.
James embarked on HMAT A14 - Euripides with the 3rd Battalion, A Company on 18 October 1914. He arrived in Egypt in December and arrived at Gallipoli, Turkey on 25 April 1915. He was admitted to the field hospital at Gallioli, Turkey on 11 July 1915 and sent from there to hosptial in England suffering from Enteritis.
James was returned to Egypt and his unit on 15 January 1916. He arrived in France on 28 March 1916 and saw service on the Western Front.
James was wounded in action at Pozieres, France between 22 and 27 July 1916 and admitted to hospital for treatment of a gun shot wound to his head. He returned to duty on 3 September 1916.
James was later admitted to hospital with trench feet.
About 4.00pm on 20 September 1917, James was in a German Pill Box when it was hit by a shell. He walked away from the incident but was admitted to hospital 2 days later with concussion.
James was returned to Australia in April 1918 and medically discharged on 21 November 1918.
He worked for the Port Kembla Steel Works after the War and did not marry.
James died in Wollongong hospital in 1951.
His brother Norman (Service no 5324) also served.
