Charles Herbert Moore
Charles Moore (Service No 587) was born in Warrengunyah, N.S.W. in 1883. In 1904 he married Francis Elliott in Sydney and they couple had a family of 3 children. During the Boer War, Charles served as a Trooper (Service No 2524) with the 3rd NSW Mounted Rifle, for 21 months.
When Charles enlisted with the AIF he was 33 years old, worked as a miner and the family lived at Coledale, N.S.W. Charles' embarkation papers hold a note that while most of the troops he is listed with embarked from Sydney on HMAT A8 Argyllshire with Field Artillery Brigade 1, Brigade Ammunition Column on 18th October 1914, a number of the men, Charles included, embarked on HMAT A4 Para.
After arriving in Egypt he was made shoeing smith on 18th December 1914. He landed at Gallipoli on 25th April and was transferred to 1st Battery on 5th August 1915. Shortly after this he was evacuated sick on 14th September 1915 and treated in hospital in Cairo for rheumatic fever.
Charles was transferred to 11th Field Artillery, 47th Battery on 23rd May 1916 and arrived in France on 10th June 1916. He saw service on the Western Front and was promoted to Bombadier on 25th August 1917.
He was admitted to hospital sick on 30th October 1917. Diagnosed with a number of medical issues, Charles was deemed unfit for further active service and returned to Australia in December 1917.
Charles died in 1948.
