6476 Pte Joseph Buchanan (Service no 6476) was born in Surry Hills, Melbourne, Victoria in 1895.

At the time of enlistment in Kiama, Joseph was single 21 years of age, employed as a labourer and resided in Dapto, NSW.   He may have been older than his recorded age at enlistment as he died in 1967 aged 82.

Joseph embarked on HMAT A40 - Ceramic with the  13th Battalion, 21st Reinforcements on 7 October 1916.  He arrived in England on 21 November 1916 and was transferred to the 19th Battalion.

Joseph joined the 19th Battalion,  C Company in the field on 5 February 1917 and saw service on the Western Front.

Joseph returned to Australia in June 1919 and was discharged on 22 September 1919.

Joseph died in Culcairn, NSW in 1967 age 82.  He is remembered on the Albion Park Roll of Honour.
