Rolande Monaro Calman
Rolande Calman (Service No 26) was born in Inverell, N.S.W.
At enlistment Rolande was single, 21 years old, worked as a clerk with the E.S. & A. Bank, and lived at Kiama. He had served 12 months with the Senior Cadets and 12 months with the militia.
He embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A72 Beltana with 36th Battalion, A Company on 13th May 1916. On 30th May 1916, whilst still on board the Beltana, Rolande was promoted to Lance Corporal. He arrived in England on 9th July 1916 and was promoted to Corporal on 28th August 1916.
He arrived in France on 22nd November 1916 and saw service on the Western Front with until 7th June 1917 when he was wounded in action at Messines. He was evacuated to hospital for treatment from a gas attack and returned to duty on 12th February 1918.
Rolande was transferred to 33rd Battalion on 10th April 1918 and served with them until 30th August 1918 when he was wounded in action a second time. He sustained gun shot wounds to his left leg and was evacuated to hospital in England for treatment.
He was returned to Australia in January 1919 and discharged, medically unfit, due to his leg wound, on 16th August 1919.
On 12th January 1922 he married Vera Johnson and they raised 4 children.
Roland died in 1967 and is buried in Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney.
His service is commemorated on the Kiama Memorial Arch & Rolls of Honours.
