William Alexander Campbell
William Campbell (Service No 5804) was born in Austinmer, N.S.W.
At enlistment, Walter was single, 21 years old, worked as a miner and lived at Balgownie, N.S.W.; Walter had served 3 years with the militia. He embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A40 Ceramic with 20th Battalion, 16th Reinforcement on 7th October 1916.
He arrived in England on 21st November 1916 and joined 20th Battalion in the field on 1st August 1917 and saw service on the Western Front. William was referred to as a 'bandsman' while he was serving with 20th Battalion (see p. 21 of his National Archives of Australia papers - NAA: B2455, CAMPBELL W A)
He was admitted to hospital sick in December 1918 and returned to Australia in January 1919.
William was discharged, medically unfit, due to nephritis on 1st May 1919.
William's service is commemorated on the Balgownie War Memorial 1914-1918.

In details of my grandfather's war service have wrong name,William not Walter.
