James Richard Smith
James Smith (Service No 16448) was born in Bangalow, N.S.W.
At enlistment James was single, 19 years old, worked as a postal assistant, and lived at Bulli, N.S.W. James had served in the Senior Cadets. He attended the Signal School at Kiama, N.S.W. before embarking from Sydney on board RMS Mongolia with 1st Australian Wireless Signal Squadron, 6th Reinforcement on 11th November 1916.
He arrived in Basra, Yemen on 16th December 1916 and saw service in Mesopotamia and Persia (now Iran).
James was returned to Australia in March 1919 and discharged from the AIF on 31st May 1919.
On 22nd December 1926 he married Magdalene Neagle.
He enlisted for service in World War II (Service No N104196) and served as a Lieutenant with 22nd Australian Works Company in New Guinea from 23rd March 1941 to 9th May 1945.
James died in 1964 and is buried in Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney.
