Michael Hanrahan (Service no 2660) was born in Bombo, NSW.  At the time of enlistment Michael was single, 23 years of age, employed as a skiff driver, resided in Kiama, NSW and had previously served 3 years with the 37th Infantry Militia.

Michael enlisted a few weeks after his brother (Service no 5117)  John Hanrahan, a Waratah, who died at Pozieres, France.

Michael embarked on HMAT A71 - Nestor with the 30th Battalion, 5th Reinforcements on 9 April 1916.  He arrived in England on 16 June 1916 and joined the 30th Battalion D Company in France on 26 September 1916.

Michael was admitted to hospital with trench feet on 22 November 1916 but returned to France on 9 July 1917.  He was transferred to 8th Light Trench Mortar Battery on 6 October 1917.

Michael saw service on the Western Front until he was wounded in action on 15 April 1918 and evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of a gun shot wound to his left thigh.

He was repatriated to Australia due to extensive damage to his leg in July 1918 and medicallyh discharged on 5 November 1918.

On 23 August 1924, Michael married Katie McDonald in Kiama, NSW.

Michael died in Kiama, NSW in 1963 and is buried in Kiama Cemetery. He is remembered on the Kiama War Memorial.
