Bertram Hoare (Service No 2576) was born in Cobargo, N.S.W.  On 24th December 1913 he married Ivy Nicholls in Kiama, N.S.W.

At  enlistment, Bertram was 25 years old, worked as a labourer and lived in Kiama. 

Bertam embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A24 Benalla with 37th Battalion, 5th Reinforcement on 9th November 1916.  He arrived in England on 9th January 1917 and was sent on to France, arriving on 22nd May 1917.  On 12th June 1917 he joined 7th Battalion in the field and saw service on the Western Front.

Bertram was wounded in action at Passchendaele on 4th October 1917.  He was buried after a shell exploded near him, and was evacuated to hospital for treatment of gun shot wounds to his spine and right leg. 

He was repatriated to Australia in August 1918 and discharged, medically unfit, with a pension on 18th October 1918.  Bertram and Alice moved to Katoomba, N.S.W. with their 3 children. 

On 5th June 1933, Bertram was riding on the running board of a lorry driven by his boss.  The vehicle was involved in a road accident and Bertram was seriously injured. He was rushed to hospital but died from his injuries the next day.  He is buried in Katoomba Cemetery.

Bertrams' service is commemorated on the Kiama Uniting Church Honour Roll & the Kiama Memorial Arch and Honours Roll.
