Norbert Joseph Byrnes
Norbert Joseph Byrnes (Service No 2966A) was born in the Hawksbury River area.
At enlistment in Brisbane, Qld, he was 38 years old, single and worked as a labourer. Norbert listed his brother, in Wollongong, N.S.W., as his next of kin.
He embarked on HMAT A74 Marathon, with the 47th battalion, 7th Reinforcement, on 27th October 1916. Norbert arrived in England on 9th January 1917, and joined the 47th Battalion in the field on 7th April 1917. He served on the Western Front until he was killed in action at Messines, Belgium. Norbert left the trench to hunt a sniper in the area and was never seen again. He was initially listed as missing but declared killed in action at a later date.
Norbert's brother, Richard Percy Byrnes (Service No 38326), also served.
